Né à Palo Alto, en Californie, Johnston a assisté à l'Université de Stanford, où il a travaillé sur le campus de l'humour magazine Stanford Chaparral, avec les collègues, futur animateur Frank Thomas-puis transféré au Chouinard Art Institute dans son année senior.[5] Ollie est mariée avec un autre employé de Disney, de l'encre et de la peinture de l'artiste Marie Worthey, en 1943.
