Mozart's famous Vaudeville after Christoph Friedrich Bretzner s work "Belmonte et Constance", L'ENLÈVEMENT AU SÉRAIL comes to life in the sumptuous setting of Topkapi, the Ottoman sultan' own Istanbul seraglio (palace harem). Belmonte finds his fiancée Constance and her English maid Zerlina, who were captured and sold by pirates, in the Mediterranean seraglio of the Ottoman pacha Selim. Belmonte s serviteur de Pedrillo gets him engaged as builder. After Selim tried to enforce himself upon Constance, Pedrillo and Zerlina, his own chérie, prepare their flight, managing to get interprété osmin, the pasha's vigilant, drunk. Yet interprété osmin and Selim s guard still capture them, already in the garden; however the touching display of true love melts the pasha s heart, so he let them go.
